NERVOUS SYSTEM (ANATOMICAL MICROSCOPY)

16.1

Brain 1 (Precentral gyrus)

Preparation:

PREPARATION DETAILS:

Organ: Brain
Origin: Human
Staining: Luxol FastBlue Cresyl Violet

METHOD AND PREPARATION:

Cresyl violet is a basic dye that binds to acids, i.e. to RNA and DNA. The chromatin of the cell nucleus, the nucleolus and the rough ER are stained blue-violet.

Luxol Fast Blue Cresyl Violet is a blue dye that stains in particular the myelin sheaths of the axons (fiber staining)

AIM OF THE INVESTIGATION:

Knowledge of the course of the fibers in the gray substance and the white substance of the cerebral cortex

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE PREPARATION:

Same region as preparation 16.9 Brain 4, additionally Luxol Fast Blue staining for the fibers, layer structure like preparation 16.9. Brain 4.

At various points, the blue-stained fiber bundles radiating into the cortex (containing ascending, afferent fibers and descending, efferent fibers) can be seen, some of which can be traced to layer 3. In addition, tangentially running fibers can be seen in various layers.

Cerebrum, area 1 (precentral gyrus) Cerebrum, area 1 (precentral gyrus)

TASKS:

What are the tangentially running fibers visible in layers 3 and 5 called to neighboring cortical areas? Where do the fibers from layer 5 project? Name 2 different target areas!
