Kidney
Specimen
SPECIMEN DETAILS:
Organ: Kidney
Origin: Human
Staining: Carmine red
METHOD AND SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION:
Normal histological section of the kidney following intravenous injection of Carmine red.
OBJECTIVE OF THE EXAMINATION:
To study the vascular structure of the kidney and the glomeruli, particularly their connections to the afferent and efferent arterioles.
Special Features of the Specimen:
General: Carmine red is injected intravenously and accumulates within the blood vessels and the capillary loops of the glomeruli. This allows for a clear overview of:
- The distribution and number of glomeruli within the cortex, and
- The relationship between the glomerular capillary loops and their afferent (incoming) and efferent (outgoing) arterioles.

TASKS:
- Obtain an overview of the gross structure of the kidney, identifying the capsule, cortex, and medulla.
- Examine the capillary loops of the renal corpuscles within the cortex.
- Identify and trace their connections to the afferent and efferent arterioles.
