1.2

Welcome to Nsuhyia, where the water meets

In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria has been commonplace for a long time. The fight against the disease includes many aspects. To address them, Keziah L. Malm and Fredros Okumu take you to an imaginary location in this region.

“Nsuhyia” means “where the water meets”. It is a fictional place, but combines many elements of a typical African village. In our course, Nsuhyia will serve as a location that helps to illustrate the fight against malaria.

In this video, Keziah and Fredros welcome you to Nsuhyia. They show you around, explain the layout and introduce you to the lives of Nsuhyia’s inhabitants. The village has a long history of malaria. The measures taken against infected mosquitoes resulted in a decline of severe cases in young children. However, in recent years the decline has slowed down.

As you take the tour with Keziah and Fredros, think about the following question and make a note of your answer:

  • What could be the reason that this decline is stalling?
