ADDRESSING YOUR AUDIENCE

1.9

You can’t be spontaneous

When you are standing in front of a camera or microphone to record a video or podcast, you can’t be spontaneous and make up your lecture as you go along.

Your spoken text needs to be prepared and practised beforehand. In a video or podcast, there can be no hesitations, no filler words, no «um», «ah» and «you know».

Before the recording, read your text out loud and practise it multiple times (see Chapter 2.10, «Check your text»). You won’t have to learn the text off by heart – you will be able to read it off a teleprompter or a piece of paper – but the more you’ve practised the text beforehand, the easier it will be on the day of the recording.
