Glossary

This glossary gives you an overview over the most-used terms and tool from the editing steps.

DaVinci Resolve Workspaces

Workspace Definition
Media Here you can manage your media.
Speedcut This is a speedcut tool. The workflow is different to the one in the Edit Page.
Edit This is our main edit workspace. Theoretically you can do most tasks here.
Fairlight Fairlight focusses on audio mixing and preparation.
Fusion This is a workspace to create graphics and VFX.
Color For color grading you can make use of this workspace.
Deliver Here we will export the video abstract.

Terms and Tools

Term / Tool Symbol Shortcut / Location Definition
A-Roll A-Roll is the media that contains the story. In our case this is the studio recording.
B-Roll B-Roll defines the assets that are used to illustrate the story. These can be images, (stock-) videos or graphics.
Auto track selector Auto track selector In track control section When these icons are enabled, certain commands will affect all clips on the corresponding tracks. For example: pressing ALT/OPT + Y will select all clips after the cursor position of those tracks, that have Auto Track Selector enabled. We would recommend to keep these icons enabled on all tracks.
Link Selection Tool link selection tool In toolbar When enabled video and audio of selected clips will be moved in sync.
In Point I Marks an in point for a selection within the viewer.
New Timeline CTRL/CMD + N Creates a new Timeline in the selected bin.
Out Point O Marks an out point for a selection within the viewer.
Razor Tool razor tool B The Razer Tool is used to cut clips at cursor position.
Retime Controls CTRL/CMD + R With Retime Controls you can manipulate the timing of clips.
Ripple Tool left, Ripple Tool right Mouse-over edges of clip These icons appear when hovering over the edges of a clip. You can trim the start/end of a clip.
Roll Edit Mouse-over a cut This icon appears when hovering over an edit. You can move the edit without changing the position of the clips. Basically this “makes one clip longer and the other shorter”.
Select all clips after the cursor position ALT/OPT + Y This shortcut lets you select all clips after the cursor position. It will only affect tracks that have the Auto Track Selector enabled.
Selection Tool selection tool A With the Selection Tool you can move clips around in the timeline and access trimming tools when hovering over edges of clips and edits.
Single / Dual Viewer Mode viewers Above viewer You can switch between single viewer and dual viewer. The left viewer shows your selected clip from the media pool, the right viewer will output the cursor position of your timeline. If this symbol isn’t visible, close the Inspector to make it visible. If your screen is very small it is possible that you have only the single viewer option at hand.
Snapping snapping N This icon lets your clips “snap” together when being moved. This helps to prevent gaps in your timeline.
Timeline View Options Here you can activate stacked timelines, change the track heights and enable thumbnails on video clips and waveforms on audio elements
Transform Tool transform tool Underneath viewer When enabled you can position the active clip with your mouse inside the viewer.
Zoom Timeline horizontally ALT/OPT + Mousewheel Stretches the timeline. You can use the shortcut or the slider in the toolbar.
Zoom Timeline vertically Shift + Mousewheel Resizes the track height of video or audio tracks.
