BLUEPRINTS OF THE MIND
4.14
From Models to Minds
Throughout this chapter, we examined how cognitive science uses formal models to explain perception, learning, and internal representations. The following questions consolidate the central distinctions between computational problems, algorithms, implementations, discriminative and generative models, Bayesian inference, prediction errors, and neuroscientific theories.
Computational models can make assumptions explicit and generate testable predictions. However, predictive success alone does not show that a model reproduces the mechanisms of the mind. The quiz therefore tests both your understanding of the models and your ability to evaluate what can legitimately be inferred from them.
