THE FOUNDATIONS OF COGNITION

Learning Systems

How do organisms move beyond innate, fixed behaviors and begin to adapt through individual experience? This video focuses on the mechanisms that allow behavior to change within a single lifetime. THis capacity marks a decisive shift in the evolution of cognition.

Even the most refined instinctive behaviors have clear limits. They are reliable, but they are not flexible.

To survive in changing and unpredictable environments, organisms needed a new capacity: the ability to modify behavior through experience. This evolutionary transition, from inherited programs to learned adjustments, marks the emergence of learning as a decisive shift from behavioral fixation to behavioral plasticity.
