'FROM SOUND TO INK' – EARLY FORMS OF MUSICAL NOTATION

2.5

Sacerdotes tui

So far we have learned how the earliest form of medieval musical notation, the neumes, looked like and how they functioned.

Now, let’s listen to a liturgical chant notated in St Gall neumes – the introitus Sacerdotes tui – performed by the Ensemble Gilles Binchois under the direction of Dominique Vellard. The ensemble sings after the manuscript Einsiedeln, Stiftsbibliothek, Cod. 121, p. 44.

You can find and download the manuscript on e-codices.
