INTRODUCTION TO VECTOR CONTROL, INSECTICIDES AND INSECTICIDE RESISTANCE

Controlling mosquitoes through their ecology

To control malaria mosquitoes, it is good to know their behaviour and life cycle. All control methods are based on this knowledge. In this video, Pie Müller addresses traditional as well as current and more experimental measures.

Mosquitoes have feeding preferences and can be indoor or outdoor biters. Long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual spraying have proved to be very effective to control malaria, because they use mosquitoes’ behaviour and turn it against them.

In addition to these two main control measures, mosquitoes may also be targeted in different ways and at other stages during their life cycle. When malaria vectors develop resistance to insecticides, alternative measures may prove to be a solution.
