WHAT IS LONELINESS?
3.2
What is loneliness
This short video introduces key anthropological perspectives on loneliness. It explores the difference between solitude and the subjective experience of social disconnection, across different contexts and stages of life.
Loneliness is not simply a matter of being alone. This video serves as a conceptual entry point into the theme, drawing attention to the subjective, relational and situational dimensions of loneliness. The video encourages viewers to reflect on how loneliness can manifest in both solitary and social settings. It also raises questions about the emotional, cultural and global aspects of loneliness – issues that will be explored further in the subsequent course materials.
Reflect & Note
After having watched the film, please think about the following questions:
How do you personally experience loneliness?
When do you find yourself feeling lonely?
How does this feeling manifest?
Do you experience loneliness primarily as something cognitive, or do you also or even primarily notice it through physical sensations in your body?
And how might your cultural background shape your understanding of what it means to be lonely?
We suggest that you take notes that you can come back to later.
