ADAM and CMS: images and diagrams

Websites based on HTML offer excellent possibilities for making images and diagrams accessible.

Alternative text on ADAM

  • Insert the image.
  • Click the image and select “Properties”.
  • Under “Alternative text”, select the “Custom” option and enter the alternative text.

Alternative text in the content management system

Most CMS offer two ways of providing images with alternative text. Try these out to see what works:

Variant 1

  • Insert your image in the text and highlight it.
  • Under Metadata, insert the alternative text.

Variant 2

  • In your website’s back end, go to “File management” or “Media” or similar.
  • Highlight the desired image.
  • Enter the metadata, including the alternative text.

Decorative elements

Certain images have only a decorative or symbolic meaning, e. g. logos or a link symbol. For such images, you must leave the alternative text field empty. The screen reader will then ignore it.

Image captions and numbering on ADAM

  • Insert the image.
  • Click the image.
  • Under “Image caption”, select the “Custom” option.
  • Enter the caption.

Image captions and numbering in CMS

In most CMS, image captions can be added in the same way as alternative text (there are two possible ways). Try these out to see what works:

Variant 1

  • Insert your image in the text and highlight it.
  • Under Metadata, insert the image caption.

Variant 2

  • In your website’s back end, go to “File management” or “Media” or similar.
  • Highlight the desired image.
  • Enter the metadata, including the image caption.

Reference to an image

References to images within a page (“see figure 16”) work in the same way as other references within the same HTML page (see Chapter 6.5). Consult your system administrator as needed.
