Linear Algebra II

Eigenvectors and the Jordan normal form

Updated June 2024

The mathematical branch of linear algebra is mainly concerned with vector spaces and linear mappings between such spaces. This includes on one hand the study of lines, planes and subspaces, on the other hand linear algebra is concerned with properties common to all vector spaces.

This course focuses mainly on eigenvectors, a prominent feature in the study of linear transformations. Linda Frey, mathematician at the University of Basel, teaches you through video tutorials the distinction between eigenvalues, eigenvectors and eigenspaces and shows you different formulas that are crucial for solving mathematical problems.

The second part of the course deals with the definition of the Jordan normal form. You will also learn an algorithm to find the corresponding base change matrix and compute the jordan normal form with different examples.
