History of Psychology

Updated June 2024

The course “History of Psychology” gives an overview of the origins of psychology by mapping the development of different schools and approaches to understanding human mental life and behavior from the 19th century to the present day.

The course documents show how psychology has become increasingly institutionalized as a scientific discipline as well as a source of various applications spanning mental health, education, work, or the communication of evidence and risk.

The lecture “History of Psychology” is offered online on this website. At the same time, the lecture is accompanied for students of the University of Basel on the Learning Management System (LMS) ADAM with a forum and course materials.

The online lecture “History of Psychology” is based on and refers to various materials, such as websites, videos, journal articles, and books. Some of these references are freely accessible, others are only made freely accessible to students and members of the University of Basel who are enrolled in the course. The latter have access to such materials via ADAM. Please note that certain links are only available within the eduroam network if they concern publications for which the university has a campus license.
